Carpet specialist and dynamic speaker Posy Benedict will speak on the horticultural aspects of carpets and textiles found in the works of Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus, India and Turkmenistan, melding two subjects many of us are passionate about: oriental rugs and flowers! Posy Benedict has served as consultant to clients that have included The White House, Sony Corp. and the new Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Besides international conferences on oriental carpets at schools such as New York University, museum audiences, horticultural societies and garden clubs, Posy has lectured extensively at the NY School of Interior Design and New School. She writes as a specialized rug journalist for several publications and is an appraiser to business and private clients.

Timeless Landscape Design: The Four Part Master Plan with Mary Palmer Dargan

Mary Palmer Dargan has specialized in the art of landscape design since 1973, and has received numerous awards including Regional and National Awards of Merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Ms. Dargan will share her approach to creating residential landscapes as outlined in her new book Timeless Landscape Design: The Four Part Plan. She will discuss the plan and the application of art elements: line, color, form and texture, as well as broader design principles such as proportion, scale and focalization. Combined, these techniques lay the groundwork for timeless landscapes that please the eye, nourish the soul and make living a little easier!

In 18th century Venice, when the demand for painted furniture could not be met, great artisans had their designs printed and glued onto furniture by their apprentices. A passion for decoupaged furniture swept through Italy and then France. In this intensive workshop, students will transform a small piece of furniture using black and white ornamental borders, cartouches and chinoiseries similar to those used centuries ago. Emphasis will be on design and composition as well as cutting and gluing techniques. Furniture provided by the student must be painted before class begins. A source and materials list will be provided upon registration. Limit 12.
